Crown Lengthening at Gloucester Dental Specialists. We’re passionate about aesthetics, giving you a bigger, more even smile.

The term “crown lengthening” refers to the process of reshaping your gum line to improve the uniformity of your smile. Furthermore, the procedure may also be used to remove excessive gum tissue in patients with chronic gum disease.

Can I benefit from crown lengthening?

If you are concerned about having “small teeth” or a “gummy” smile, you might consider crown lengthening. This appearance can sometimes be caused by a high lip line and an excessive gum line. However, contouring can still be used to blend these two features together. By spreading soft tissue over and around exposed areas, the gum contouring procedure can also reduce sensitivity.

What effect does gum contouring have on my smile?

We can enhance the look of your teeth by altering your gums as a truly custom cosmetic procedure. We can also shorten, smoothen, or level your teeth to improve the appearance of your smile line.

Is crown lengthening uncomfortable?

Crown lengthening procedures are performed under local anaesthesia. You will be able to feel a few sensations, such as pressure, but no discomfort. In addition, for maximum healing time, our professional cosmetic dental surgeons utilise electrosurgery probes rather than scalpels to remove gum tissue.

How long will my gums need to heal?

The average recovery time is one week to 10 days. In most situations, recovery is simple, and many patients return to their review visit with a beaming smile. In general, the more time you get to relax following gum surgery, the faster you will heal. We’ll go through a few steps that will help with the recuperation process.

  • Oral Hygiene: Brushing and flossing should be done gently for a few weeks following gum contouring. A basic saltwater solution should be used to clean the region. After meals, rinse your mouth with saline to eliminate food particles and residue.
  • Managing discomfort: Some swelling and slight soreness in the region is usual. If you are in discomfort, you can use over-the-counter medications to relieve any mild physical discomfort.
  • Diet: Avoid spicy and crunchy foods. Your recuperation will be slowed as the region becomes inflamed. Strawberry, kiwi, poppyseeds, and popcorn are among foods that contain microscopic seeds that might irritate the gums. While you’re healing, you should have soft spaghetti, yoghurt, eggs, cooked veggies, and (sugar-free) ice cream on hand.
  • Physical Activity: Limit your activity levels to keep your body relaxed and recuperated! If you’re a runner or do weights, you should take a break.
